In December last year, a group of Year 10 and 11 students travelled to Italy for two weeks, as part of their Italian studies. We visited Venice, Verona, Florence, Pisa, ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ and Rome. It was a very memorable, fun and exciting experience, as we got to see so many amazing monuments and architecture and immersed ourselves in the Italian culture. We ate lots of pasta, pizza and Italian delicacies as we practised and improved our language skills along the way.

The first place we visited in Italy was Venice, where we stayed for three days. We visited the iconic St Mark’s square, la Piazza San Marco, with all the gorgeous churches and buildings near the water. We visited the Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and Saint Mark’s Basilica. In Venice, we also had the opportunity to visit Murano and Burano, two islands that are famous for producing hand blown glass and hand sewn lace.

Whilst in Verona, we visited Juliet’s statue on her beautiful balcony and all the love letters addressed to her plastered on the walls. After Verona, we then visited the beautiful city of Florence where we stayed for six days. We went to school there for five of those days where we enhanced our Italian knowledge in exchange for teaching our teachers some of our Aussie slang. We climbed the Duomo in Florence and when we reached the top, we were blown away from the amazing panoramic views of Florence. During our stay in Florence, we also visited Pisa where we saw the famous leaning tower and made the 284 stair climb to the top. The climb felt a little strange as you could actually feel the tilt in the tower.

We stopped in ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ on the way to Rome where we saw firsthand the inspiration for our College blazer, as all the rooftops were made of rust Tuscan tiles. We explored the city and visited churches, one of which contained the sculpted head of St Catherine of ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ whose house we also visited.

In Rome, we visited the Vatican City where we toured the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel as well as St Peter’s Cathedral. We also visited the Colosseum, the Forum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon. This was a trip to remember and the friendships made will last a lifetime.
